The tragedy that terrifies the world- Khojaly- 26

On February 26, 1992, Armenian armed forces committed a genocide act in Khojaly, with 7000 inhabitants. During the Khojaly genocide, 613 people were murdered, and 1000 people with different ages became disabled because of the bullet wounds. 106 women, 63 children, 70 elderly people were killed. 8 families were completely destroyed, 25 children lost both parents and 130 children lost one of their parents. 1275 civilians were captured on the night of tragedy, with 150 of them with unknown fate.

All this was done by Armenian soldiers with special cruelty and unbelievable brutality. The 2nd battalion of the 366 regiment of the Soviet army under the command of Mayor Ohanyan Seyran Mishegovic, the 3rd battalion under the command of Yevgeny Nabokikhin, chief of the battalion No.1 Citchyan Valeri Isayevich and more than 50 Armenian officers took part in the attack.

Khojaly tragedy was a crime against humanity because of the brutality of the Armenian nationalists, genocide and ethnic cleansing policy against our people for centuries, due to their mercilessness and cruelty.

Like many national tragedies, the political- legal assessment of the Khojaly genocide was made possible after the national leader Heydar Aliyev regained political power in Azerbaijan. In 1994, on the initiative of the Great Leader, the Milli Mejlis adopted a special resolution “On Khojaly genocide day” on February 26. The document describes the causes of the incident and the details of the culprits. According to the Order of the Great Leader dated February 25, 1997, every year on February 26, at 17:00, the memory of Khojaly victims is commemorated with a minute of silence. National leader Heydar Aliyev, who met with the Khojaly people in 1996, noted that this tragedy was one of the bloody pages of history.

Today, internally displaced persons from Khojaly have been temporarily settled in 50 cities and regions of our republic. New settlements have been built and buildings have been constructed for Khojaly families, who have difficult living conditions. The head of State pays attention to the improvement of their living conditions.

The “Justice for Khojaly!” campaign, launched on the initiative of the Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva is rising every year. The aim of the campaign is to provide a legal and political assessment of the crime in Khojaly and the recognition of the Khojaly genocide in the world. International information campaign “Justice for Khojaly” is successfully implemented in many countries of the world and is aimed at recognition of the tragedy at the moral and political level.

Over time, the Khojaly genocide gains its true value by taking serious steps in promoting the Khojaly tragedy in parliaments and other legislative bodies of different countries. This systematic work brings its results.

The resoluteness of President Ilham Aliyev in this regard and the work he has done in this direction give us the certainty that prominent international organizations and the whole world will support Azerbaijan’s position.
